Go forth, July

Up with the larks (if any) and off to the Chelsea Flea Market on W25th. For a dollar we get to look at some bric-a-brac and junk, some nice textiles and overpriced silverware. There are Silver Age comics going cheap, perhaps a sign of a collapsed market for middle-aged nostalgia.

Across the road are a few antiques stores, including one which specialises in Italian furniture from the mid-20th century.

On the way back we look at the sights and become a little more oriented - on this my third trip to NYC the city streets are beginning to make more sense and I recall approaching streets from different directions.

Next is a trip to the local shops for weird foods and drinks. Lynda picks up three types of coconut water from the twenty or thirty on offer, I find some inexpensive grappa and brunch on a turkey sandwich and pistachio rice pudding.

I was interested to see some billboards from the Turkish Government still in futile denial about the Armenian genocide.

Our major expedition today is a visit to Cort Theater to watch the Larry David comedy Fish In The Dark, now with Seinfeld's Jason Alexander in the lead role.

We're in the Gods in separate seats, drinking wine from big plastic souvenir cups. The show is hilarious, Larry David's script is absurd but builds steadily. Jason Alexander plays it as if it was George Constanza with a different dysfunctional family, and the rest of the cast is crisp and clever. I enjoyed seeing Glenne Headly (the third scammer from Dirty Rotten Scoundrels) as his wife.

"Norman - do you know why we don't have sex any more?"
"Why - you don't want to ruin the friendship?"

After the show, on the way back to the subway I'm ambushed by three rappers in Times Square who quickly autograph their CDs for me and hustle me for payment. Another trap for rubes, but I listen to them at home for the reinforced educational value.
